The Hunter Movie Storyline
Red Leaf, a military biotech company, hires mercenary Martin David to travel to Tasmania. His goal is to locate and gather samples from the Tasmanian tiger, or thylacine, an animal that is thought to be extinct. He then plans to kill any tigers that remain to ensure that no other business can obtain their DNA.
Pretending to be a university biologist, Martin stays with Lucy Armstrong and her two children, Jamie and Katie. Due to medication taken after her husband, Jarrah, vanished, Lucy frequently loses consciousness. Jarrah was an environmentalist, and his disappearance is shrouded in mystery, largely due to the rivalry between local loggers seeking work and environmentalists seeking to preserve the forest. Martin sets traps and waits for the tiger in the forest for up to twelve days at a time. In case something were to happen to him, he provides the family with a map showing his position. While visiting the Armstrongs, Martin makes friends with the children and learns that Jack Mindy, who takes care of Lucy, gives her medication.
When Martin returns from one trip, Lucy has improved. Jamie gives him a drawing of the tiger near trees and water, helping Martin find the tiger’s location. On his next trip, Martin finds Jarrah’s skeleton and sees he was shot in the head. He buries Jarrah but doesn’t tell the family. Lucy later tells Martin that Red Leaf hired Jarrah first to find the tiger, but he stopped to protect wildlife instead. Red Leaf believed the tiger’s bite had a paralyzing venom.
Another Red Leaf agent dispatched to replace Martin attacks him while he is inspecting his traps. Martin murders him after tricking him into stepping on a trap. When Martin discovers the map he left with the Armstrongs, he knows the agent has visited their home. When he returns in a hurry, the house has burned down. Mindy informs him that although Jamie survived the fire and was apprehended by the cops, Lucy and Katie perished. Martin returns to the bush, finds the Tasmanian tiger, and unwillingly kills it, burning its corpse to remove all traces in an effort to put a stop to Red Leaf’s pursuit.
Telling Red Leaf over the phone that the tiger is “gone forever,” Martin After that, he visits Jamie’s school. Jamie runs to Martin upon seeing him, and they give each other a firm hug.
