Tracy Edwards began the movie by talking about her early years in England, which were shaped by the death of her father at the age of ten from a heart attack. The family relocated to Wales when her mother remarried an abusive alcoholic. After being expelled from school at the age of sixteen, Edwards fled and made his way throughout Europe, arriving in Greece. She learnt to sail there and worked as a yacht stewardess while visiting the Americas. As her enthusiasm for the Whitbread Round the World Race developed, she met King Hussein of Jordan, who urged her to enlist in the yacht crew for the 1985–86 race as the lone female cook.
Edwards declared following the race that she was putting together an all-female crew for the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989–1990, despite general scepticism. The multinational crew had many obstacles to overcome, one of which was getting the million-pound sponsorship. Edwards bought a used yacht, christened it Maiden, and mortgaged her house to pay for the refit, which was mostly done by her crew. They joined the Fastnet Race with Royal Jordanian Airlines sponsorship arranged by King Hussein, but they were forced to withdraw from the competition because of an injury. Relentlessly, Edwards guided Maiden in the Whitbread as both captain and navigator.
Maiden completed the first leg from England to Uruguay in third place within its class. They took first place on the second and third legs, which took them over the choppy and icy Southern Ocean to Australia and New Zealand, gaining them international notoriety. On the fifth leg to Florida, though, third place was achieved due to issues with water intake on the fourth leg back to Uruguay. Despite a paucity of wind on the final stretch to England, Maiden finished in second position overall. After their triumphant return, Edwards and her team broke down boundaries for women in athletics and sailing. Edwards receives the Yachtsman of the Year Award as the movie comes to a close.
