Adam Wingard is the director of the 2024 American monster movie Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. It is the fifth movie in the MonsterVerse series and the follow-up to Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), produced by Legendary Pictures and released by Warner Bros. Pictures. It is also the thirteenth movie in the King Kong series and the 38th in the Godzilla series. Starring in the movie with Rebecca Hall are Fala Chen, Alex Ferns, Kaylee Hottle, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dan Stevens. Hall, Henry, and Hottle all play the same parts as in the last movie. In this episode, Kong finds more of his kind in the Hollow Earth and has to work with Godzilla to stop the mighty, frost-breathing Shimo and the despotic Skar King from overrunning the planet.

In March 2022, Legendary announced a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, with filming set to begin later that year, in response to the film’s popularity at the box office and on streaming services amid the COVID-19 epidemic. It was announced in May 2022 that Stevens had been given a leading part and that Wingard would be returning to the director’s chair. On Australia’s Gold Coast, July through November of 2022, was the time for filming.

On March 25, 2024, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire made its world debut at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. On March 29, the film was released in the United States. Critics gave the movie varying ratings, frequently drawing negative comparisons between it and Godzilla Minus One. In spite of this, it made $570 million worldwide on a budget of $135–150 million, making it the highest-grossing movie in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla, and King Kong franchises, as well as the third-highest-grossing movie of 2024. The release date of the sequel is set for March 26, 2027.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Movie Storyline

Kong has taken up residence in a new area of the Hollow Earth and is looking for other members of his kind, three years after he defeated Mechagodzilla [b]. Godzilla kills Titanus Scylla in Rome and then rests in the Colosseum to uphold order between humanity and the Titans while he is still on Earth.

An unknown transmission is picked up by a Monarch observation outpost in the Hollow Earth. The signal first gives Jia, the last known survivor of the Iwi tribe from Skull Island, hallucinations and visions, which worries Dr. Ilene Andrews, the Kong expert and Jia’s adopted mother. After identifying the signal, Godzilla departs from Rome, strikes a nuclear power station in France to gather radioactive material, and then makes his way to Titan Tiamat’s Arctic stronghold. Monarch thinks Godzilla is getting ready for something that could happen soon.

Kong finds himself in an unknown world where a tribe of his kind, including a little one named Suko, have survived after a sinkhole opens up close to his house. Following a brief altercation, Kong persuades Suko to accompany him to the tribe’s lair, and the two become closer as they travel. With the assistance of an old ice-powered Titan named Shimo, whom he commands with a crystal that hurts her, the tribe’s despotic leader, Skar King, fights Kong. Kong’s right arm gets injured by Shimo’s icy breath, but with Suko’s assistance, he manages to flee after dropping his axe.

To find the source of the signal, Andrews, Jia, conspiracy podcaster Bernie Hayes, and Titan veterinarian Trapper travel to Hollow Earth. The Monarch outpost is destroyed, they discover. By following the signal, they find a temple that is home to a telepathically communicating Iwi tribe that survives by living behind surface-level gateways. They discover upon inspecting the temple that the signal was a telepathic distress call from the Iwi.

Andrews confides in Trapper her concern that Jia might decide to stay with her people after seeing Jia interact socially with the Iwi. Andrews finds hieroglyphics inside the temple that show the past and future: Skar King once made an attempt to subjugate the Earth, coerced Shimo into starting an ice period, and led an army against the Godzilla race. Godzilla subdued him by imprisoning him and his clan in the Hollow Earth’s interior. Jia is also mentioned in the prophecy as being essential to reawakening Mothra. Kong finds the temple after spotting Jia, and Trapper gives him a prototype exoskeleton glove to help heal his frostbitten limb. They are unaware that another ape has alerted Skar King to the opening of the barrier that protects the surface portals. Jia awakens the reborn with great accomplishment.

As this is going on, Godzilla destroys Tiamat and turns his dorsal plates purple by absorbing cosmic radiation from her lair. Kong appears in Cairo and reaches out to Godzilla, hoping to entice him to Hollow Earth for help. An infuriated Godzilla attacks despite Kong’s attempts to communicate, starting a brief fight until Mothra steps in. To battle Skar King and Shimo, Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra make a comeback to the Hollow Earth. Kong loses his axe in the battle. Godzilla and Kong are forced to pursue Skar King and Shimo to Rio de Janeiro after they use a portal to escape to the surface, where Shimo causes a second ice age under Skar King’s direction. Up until Suko arrives with Kong’s axe and destroys the crystal controlling Shimo, the sides are evenly matched.

Godzilla goes back to sleep in the Colosseum after using his atomic breath to reverse the effects of the ice age. Jia chooses to remain in Andrews’ home. Mothra repairs the portals and the Iwi’s dwelling’s defence system. Kong takes over as the new chief of the ape tribe when he returns to Hollow Earth with Shimo and Suko.
