“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” a 2024 American paranormal comedy directed by Gil Kenan, is the sequel to “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (2021) and the fourth mainline installment in the Ghostbusters franchise. The film stars Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, and Logan Kim, all reprising their roles from “Afterlife.” It also brings back franchise veterans Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton. Beginners to the cast have Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Emily Alyn Lind, and James Acaster.

Set three years after “Afterlife,” the story follows the actual Ghostbusters as they join forces with a new age of draftees to save New York City from a strong ghostly commodity plan on building an army of ghosts.

After the success of “Afterlife,” Sony Pictures revealed the sequel in April 2022. Although Jason Reitman was initially slated to direct, Gil Kenan took over in December 2022, with Reitman remaining as co-writer and producer. Filming started in March 2023 and covered up in June. The film’s score was written by Dario Marianelli, who replaced Rob Simonsen from “Afterlife.” This is the first Ghostbusters film released after the death of co-creator Ivan Reitman, who is honored in the recognition as a producer alongside his son, Jason Reitman, and Jason Blumenfeld. The film is devoted to Ivan Reitman and also marks the 40th anniversary of the original “Ghostbusters.”

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” premiered at AMC 13 Theater at Lincoln Square in New York City on March 14, 2024, and was released in the United States on March 22 under the Columbia Pictures label. Although analysts showed mixed thoughts, audiences typically reacted completely, and the film has grossed over $201 million worldwide.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Movie Storyline

Three years after the events in Summerville, Oklahoma, Callie Spengler, her boyfriend Gary Grooberson, her kids Trevor and Phoebe, and their friends Lucky Domingo and Podcast move to New York City to help Winston Zeddemore and Ray Stantz revive the Ghostbusters. After catching a ghost in Hell’s Kitchen, Mayor Walter Peck, their old foe, risks to shut them down, driving Callie to pull Phoebe from the team.

Distraught, Phoebe befriends Melody, the ghost of a teenage girl who died in a fire. Meanwhile, Ray and Podcast receive a mysterious arrogance ball that releases a cold wave, hurting their ecto-containment team. As they explore, they find the orb contains Garraka, an ancient phantom god with the power to kill through fear. Garraka, once detained by Nadeem Razmaadi’s predecessor, is now seeking to break free.

With Garraka threatening to release an undead army, the Ghostbusters, joined by Nadeem and his newfound pyrokinetic powers, ready for battle. Despite their actions, Garraka runs and starts freezing the city. Phoebe, with the help of Melody, who ultimately turns against Garraka, electroplates Egon Spengler’s proton pack with brass, weakening the god. The team then traps Garraka using a makeshift giant trap.

As the city thaws, the Ghostbusters are celebrated as heroes, Peck is forced to support them, and Phoebe is reinstated. The team continues their ghost-catching tasks.

In a mid-credits location, Mini-Pufts hijack a trucker’s Stay-Puft Marshmallows truck while he’s delighted at a vending machine.
